ACADEMIC TEAMS

Newark WYSE Team

WYSE, or World Youth in Science and Engineering, is an academic competition in which high school students take tests in two subject areas of their choice. The competitive series of tests are created and administered by WYSE and are offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to students.

Students pick from a total of seven subjects – math, English, chemistry, physics, computer science, biology and graphic engineering. Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula and written by teams of college and university faculty. There are medals given for 1st through 3rd place in each subject area. A team consists of 14 students of any grade level.

Newark Scholastic Bowl

Scholastic Bowl is an IHSA sponsored activity that is offered at most public schools in Illinois. Teams spend much time preparing for matches by going over rules and logistics and doing sample questions. However, since there is no real way to “study”, the students must use the information they already know. “Our team usually does very well with math and science questions,” says Mr. Michael Hall II, the team moderator.

Newark Jets

Mr. Hall II also leads our JETS program. According to the JETS website, “The Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science, [are] a unique and challenging academic program and competition that introduces high school students to various engineering disciplines and illustrates how the study of math and science is applied in the real world....Part one answers are scored on competition day and are used to determine local and state standings, as well as eligibility for national scoring. Part two responses are scored at JETS for national ranking. Typically, hosts for this program are colleges, universities, professional organizations, or corporations; to find the competition site nearest you and to register visit www.jets.org.”
