The
Learn and Serve program addresses the need to (1) build intergenerational
relationships between high school students and senior community
members through a local history project that captures the communitys
heritage in writing and through a multi-media presentation, in collaboration
with the Newark Senior Center and Ferndell Historical Society, (2)
organizing local history documents at the Charles B. Phillips Library
and digitally archiving documents, (3) leading children's story
hours with book talks and assisting children in locating resources.
and (4) working with the senior citizen center to beautify the grounds.
Service learning activities will become a part of students' portfolios
and may be a component of their senior portfolio presentation as
a graduation requirement.
Project activities include comprehensive project planning to expand
upon current Learn and Serve project partnerships, incorporating
a student portfolio as a graduation requirement, interviewing senior
citizens and members of the Ferndell Historical Society to capture
living local history, organizing and archiving the local history
collection at the community library, conducting story hours and
assisting children at the library, landscaping at the Newark Senior
Center, and holding an intergenerational celebration for the community.
